NATURAL STONE ARCHES

Door and window heads in stonework can be classed as beams, lintel or arches and are not always an obvious feature because they are integral to the stone detail. Their function is the same though: to provide support for the masonry above by transferring the loads. Our natural stone arches can be used as stand-alone arches or part of the overall opening detail. We will create CAD drawings to show the individual stones of the arch, but once built with 3 mm joints of matching lime mortar the arch may appear as homogeneous stonework.

ARCHES FOR TRADITIONAL CONSTRUCTION METHODS
Lambs traditional natural stone arches are cut and delivered to be jointed on site using a mortar binder. The voussoirs (arch units) are carefully numbered to correspond with our full size drawing. These arches are load bearing and if the proportions are right the width can be increased without loss of load bearing capability.

An alternative is to use a stone beam or lintel: a horizontal block that spans an opening which can be decorative. With Sussex Sandstone we use a Fine Grade to achieve the structural strength.
ARCH DESIGN
Our arches are all made to specification, and our arch design service includes a site visit, sketch layouts and working CAD drawings.

All drawings are issued to the client for formal approval.
